Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Brimsdown
Gardeners Brimsdown is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, clients, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This Health and Safety policy sets out our approach to identifying, managing and minimising risks associated with our work across our service area.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objective is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property or the environment arising from our gardening services. We aim to achieve this by maintaining high standards of planning, training, supervision and communication on every project, from regular garden maintenance to larger landscaping and clearance work.
We will review and update this policy periodically to ensure it remains relevant to our operations, legal obligations and industry best practice.
Responsibilities and Management of Health and Safety
Ultimate responsibility for health and safety rests with the management of Gardeners Brimsdown. Management will ensure that adequate resources are made available to implement and maintain this policy, including appropriate equipment, training, supervision and time for safety planning.
All employees and contractors working on behalf of Gardeners Brimsdown share responsibility for their own safety and for the safety of others who may be affected by their actions. Everyone is expected to follow safe systems of work, use equipment properly, report hazards and cooperate with health and safety procedures.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Before starting any gardening or landscaping task, we will assess the associated risks and put in place appropriate control measures. This includes considering the nature of the site, access routes, weather conditions, existing vegetation, ground conditions, nearby structures and the presence of other people or animals.
Where necessary, written risk assessments and method statements will be prepared, and all team members will be briefed on the safe system of work before starting the job. Work will be planned to minimise exposure to hazards such as sharp tools, machinery, chemicals, uneven ground, working at height, noise and dust.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Brimsdown will ensure that all staff are competent to carry out their duties safely. This includes providing initial induction training, ongoing refresher training and task-specific instruction for the safe use of tools, machinery and substances.
Staff operating powered equipment, such as lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, blowers or other specialist machinery, will receive appropriate training and will only use equipment for which they are competent and authorised. Less experienced team members will be supervised until they have demonstrated the necessary skills and understanding of safety procedures.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Vehicles
All gardening tools, machinery and vehicles will be maintained in safe working condition in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant regulations. Pre-use checks will be carried out, and any defective equipment will be taken out of service immediately until repaired or replaced.
Machinery guards and safety devices must never be removed or overridden. Safe operating distances will be maintained to protect team members, clients and the public from flying debris, moving parts and noise. Vehicles will be used and parked responsibly to avoid obstruction, protect pedestrians and maintain safe access to properties.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Brimsdown will provide suitable personal protective equipment where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Depending on the task, this may include safety footwear, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, respiratory protection and protective clothing.
All staff must wear the equipment provided when required, keep it in good condition and report any damage or defects without delay so that replacements can be arranged.
Chemical and Pesticide Safety
Where garden treatments, fertilisers, pesticides or other chemicals are used, they will be selected, stored, transported and applied in accordance with manufacturer instructions and applicable safety requirements. We will always seek to minimise the use of hazardous substances and consider safer alternatives wherever practical.
Only trained and authorised personnel will apply such products. Appropriate precautions will be taken to protect people, pets, wildlife, watercourses and neighbouring properties, including clear communication with clients about any necessary exclusion periods.
Working at Height and Manual Handling
Tasks involving work at height, such as tree pruning, hedge cutting from ladders or working on raised areas, will be planned and carried out using appropriate equipment and techniques. Ladders and access equipment will be used safely, and work at height will be avoided where a safer alternative method is reasonably practicable.
Manual handling of soil, plants, waste, equipment and materials will be risk assessed. Staff will receive guidance on safe lifting techniques and will use mechanical aids or team lifting where loads are heavy, awkward or need to be moved over distance.
Site Housekeeping and Public Safety
Work areas will be kept as tidy as practicable, with tools, materials and waste stored safely to minimise the risk of trips, slips and falls. Cables, hoses and equipment will be routed and positioned to reduce obstruction and prevent accidental contact.
Where our gardening activities may affect clients, neighbours or passers-by, we will use appropriate barriers, signage and other controls to maintain safe separation from our works. We will be considerate in managing noise, dust and other potential disturbances.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses, injuries and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. This allows us to investigate causes, learn from incidents and implement improvements to prevent recurrence.
Staff will be briefed on emergency procedures, including how to respond to injuries, spills, fires and other unexpected events. Suitable first aid provision will be available during gardening operations, and team members will know how to obtain medical assistance when required.
Continuous Improvement and Policy Review
Gardeners Brimsdown is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. We will monitor our activities, review feedback from staff and clients, and update our procedures as necessary to reflect changing circumstances, new guidance or lessons learned from incidents.
This Health and Safety policy will be reviewed regularly and revised where needed to ensure it remains effective in supporting safe, professional gardening services throughout our service area.
